Worked examples

Weights that sum to 100

  • categories = name: Homework, weight: 20, score: 90, name: Exams, weight: 50, score: 80, name: Quiz, weight: 30, score: 70

Result: 79.00% (C+)

What do I need on the final?

  • target = 90

Result: Overall 80.00% — target not possible (needs 105% on remaining 40%)

Frequently asked questions

How is my weighted grade calculated?

Multiply each category weight by its score, add them all up, and divide by the total weight. With Homework 20% at 90, Exams 50% at 80, and Quiz 30% at 70: (20×90 + 50×80 + 30×70) ÷ 100 = 79%.

What if my weights do not add up to 100%?

The calculator normalizes automatically — it divides by the total weight you entered. If you set a target grade and the weights total less than 100%, it also estimates the score you need on the remaining weight to reach that target.

How is the letter grade determined?

Using a standard scale: 97+ A+, 93–96 A, 90–92 A−, 87–89 B+, 83–86 B, 80–82 B−, and so on down to F below 60. Check with your institution, as scales vary.
